CyberneticsCybernetics can perform some amazing things. There was a guy recently that sent a command over the internet to a robotic arm with his mind. That’s right, I say, “With his mind.”Cybernetics is the process of morphing human and machine together. If you have seen Star Trek, than you may see the relationship between cybernetics and the Borg existence. The Borg was a people that had a strong computer element attached to their brains and they wore some kind of computer over one eye. How Cybernetics Can WorkOne scientist attached a chip inside his arm that would read nerve impulses. The chip would also send a radio signal out. Then, a remote device, like a small car, could be controlled with the brain. The key point is to have something embedded safely into the nervous system that can read neurological input.Future of CyberneticsIt is generally agreed upon, by scientists, that some major breakthroughs are needed before the technology can really become mainstream. The brain is so complex and poorly understood that it makes cybernetics quite difficult. The exciting part is that it is indeed being researched and it is possible to implant the technology into animals or humans and have it read the neurological stimulus. There are recent studies of monkeys that can control a robotic arm with their brain to get fed.FDA ApprovalThe FDA has approved the use of a chip made by Verisign. The implantable chip can be done in only a few minutes. It is smaller than a grain of rice. The chip is being promoted as something for medical emergencies. For example, a person could be scanned and people would immediately know blood type and allergies, etc.The factor raising concern is that the chip will also be used for other purposes; for example, to track employees and even for the Federal Government to track citizens. There are privacy issues with using the chip. |
