Food BiotechnologyThe United States has a very low employment rate of farmers (3-5% of workers). These farmers are able to make an enormous amount of food with a small amount of labor.Biotechnology has made the process easier. Produce grows larger and is resistant to insects, water shortages, and floods. We eat genetically engineered foods whether we know it or not. It is not labeled on food and food suppliers choose the least cost food for production. This means you likely eat a log of biotechnology foods without knowing it. One of the tomatoes, not sure which one, has a rat gene infused with it to make it stay red without spoiling. A strawberry has a gene of a cold water fish to make it resistant to cold weather. With biotechnology it is like you aren’t really sure what you are actually eating. SeedsSeeds are produced and considered a proprietary product. Most seeds from crops are not compatible with production. For example, most seeds that you buy only produce crops for one season and that’s it. You need to go back to the supplier to get seed for the next year. The company that owns nearly every seed in the world is Monsanto. They have lots of scientists and have made a concerted and sometimes controversial effort to control all seed and agriculture production. Some people even claim they are trying to purchase all of the fresh water they can as another source of agricultural control. |
