Super HumanThere are exciting leaps in technology that are taking place. As a human race we have accomplished amazing things like cloning, genetic engineering, and space flight. When a technology amazingly goes above and beyond our expectations we call that technology super human. Future of TechnologyThe future of technology is limitless. In the very near future, we can expect human lifespan to increase, a manned mission to Mars, the use of cybernetics, genetic therapy drugs, and alternative energy going mainstream, to name a few. Most of the advances in technology are aimed at helping people live longer and healthier or are aimed at helping people to get more work done with less labor. For example, nanomachines, one of the largest advances in the world, will be able to self replicate and produce continually. On the other side of the coin, cloning, stem cells, and embryology point to growing new parts for the human body that are identical to each human that needs it. The Talking Heads and Cryogenic FreezingI always think of the Simpson’s episode where there are talking heads preserved under glass of famous people; like presidents of the United States. The heads are still alive and can talk. This idea is actually based in some sort of reality. Through cryogenic freezing, you can pay to have your head frozen or your entire body. The idea is that once science has advanced far enough you can be unthawed and live. Evidently, some people think having the head alive will be good enough because the rest of the body can be grown from innovative DNA techniques. One person that was cryogenically frozen was Walt Disney. He had cancer and so, upon death, he froze himself for unthawing when a cure is found. I wonder how he’ll like coming back from heaven to an old unthawed body.Picking Future of Technology WinnersSome technologies catch on and others don’t. Some are quite lucrative for their creators and others become a “free”, but great benefit to mankind. If you are looking for winners, you might look to drug therapy that uses gene splicing techniques. This has the potential to make a huge impact on people. Once a gene database is fully developed and people can get their genetic information quickly and accessibly then you can expect great advancements in the medical community. Through cybernetics people will be able to be diagnosed much quicker and the treatments will be much more precise. Doctors will soon be able to treat a person instead of a disease. The analogy might be to use a scalpel instead of a chain saw. RoboticsEverybody wants a walking talking robot assistant. The idea has been around for many years. Honda and other companies are working on creating something that will be able to do your household chores for you. Once robotics reaches the level of being able to do most human tasks, work effort, in society will be greatly reduced. The added bonus is that people just love robots. You can put your money in the bank on robots because people want to buy them even if they are impractical. Just look at the robotic dogs made by Sony that sold so well.Seeing Reality in the Future of TechnologyHumans have five senses that see about 1% of what is around them. This means that any new technology that lets us see more of the universe around us will be invaluable. The science of nanotechnology (building things from the size of an atom) and quantum mechanics are new fields that will help us see more of what’s around us and to create a lot of new things. One of these items, carbon nanotubes, has produced many new inventions already; such as the invisible cloak.ConnectomicsEventually the human brain will have a wiring diagram. Once the diagram is completed we will invent a way to come up with each person’s brain wire diagram in a short amount of time; perhaps with cybernetics. Connectomics will open and perhaps allow us to capitalize on using our brains closer to capacity. In addition, cybernetics will allow us to download information into our brain and that will make learning a lot faster.Ethics and ImrovementsIn general, people don’t exactly like to change. There are people all across America that tries to stop stem cell research, embryology research, and even cybernetic research. In combating these people, we have found that the promise of science is too tempting. We can expect these movements to only slow us down. For example, it is too valuable to be able to grow yourself a new heart to just cancel research based on ethic worries. And, many of the protestors find themselves using the technology they don’t like when they need it. One of the key questions is this, “As a species, do we try to dominate and control others or are we concerned with helping others?” The possibilities of emerging technology can only grow as much as we are willing to work together as a human race. Perhaps the largest obstacle in front of us is that people must be responsible and ethical to have powerful technologies. Until we, as the human race, are able to really work together, some of these changes can be quite scary. |
