RFID Tags

RFID is short for radio frequency identification.  It has become more popular because of Wal-Mart requiring suppliers to use the tags.

The tags have historically been used to track animals.  For example, to pick up your dog that got taken to the pound.

Today’s world is ramping up and using them a lot in retail.  The tags prevent theft because they go off when people try to steal them.

They are also a great inventory tool.  You can easily know what items you have by a series of scans.

RFID Future

There are self checkouts at many retailers.  In the future, self checkout will be more like turbo self checkout.  Stores are moving to a system of automatic checkout.  You simply fill up the cart and walk out the store.  The RFID tags will ring you up and another tag will take the money out of your bank.  The process will be convenient for people and save retailers a lot of labor cost.

Inventory will also be much better.  A store will know instantly inventory levels and items can automatically be ordered.  This will, again, save a lot of labor and be more efficient; resulting in savings.
